Mapping of Urban Green Spaces Toward a Balanced Planning in Coastal Landscape Case Study of Sousse City

Urban green spaces (UGSs) can make a significant contribution to sustainable development. A spatial method was employed to assess and map the spatial distribution of UGSs in five boroughs in Sousse, Tunisia. Given that ecological management of UGSs is an essential factor for a city’s sustainable development, the municipality of Sousse has decided to support the boroughs according to various green space characteristics. To implement this policy, (1) a new GIS web application was developed, (2) then a cloud-based implementation of the various green spaces was conducted, (3) a spatial mapping of UGS using Quantum GIS was carried out, and (4) finally a data processing and statistical analysis was run. Cross-linking the results of the spatial and statistical analysis highlighted an imbalance in terms of the spatial distribution and the quality of UGS in the study area. Jawhara and Erriadh have significantly more UGSs than Sidi Abd Elhamid and Khzema. The UGSs in Erriadh and Sidi Abdelhamid are in bad condition, whereas in Khzema and Medina most spaces are in good condition. This GIS support will be used to assess and monitor green spaces in the city of Sousse by decision-makers and will-help to improve the well-being of the local population.
