Remote IoT Sensing for Precision Agriculture

This paper presents a remote IoT sensing solution aiming at soil monitoring that bundles sensing and communication technologies for underground operation targeting precision irrigation in both urban and rural settings. We present our prototype based on LoRa/LoRaWAN technology and off-the-shelf hardware, and its enclosure to allow underground operation without interfering with the communication. Our results show the potential of LoRa/LoRaWAN for underground-to-aboveground communication, but the type of hardware used does impact packet delivery rate and transmission distance.
