The Effect of Sulfate Content in Mixed Sand on the Mechanical Properties of Adobe

Due to their excellent thermal properties, Adobe bricks have a high thermal insulation capacity. However, they offer poor mechanical properties, in particular, resistance to compression, which is essential in load-bearing walls of buildings in the Saharan zone in southern Algeria. We have improved its mechanical characteristics from 30 to 36% in compressive strength and from 60 to 71% in bending strength, depending on the concentration of sulfate salts in the sand used in the adobe mix. Work is within the framework of valorization and exploitation of the abundant natural resources of the saline sands in the south of Algeria.
