The Legal and Regulatory Framework for Protection and Conservation of the Deep-Sea Floor, with a Particular Reference to Mid-Ocean Ridges: A Summary

Activities aimed at protection and conservation of the deep-sea floor are at present governed by legal instruments which form a multi-tier system. The chapter provides a brief review of those legal instruments, they primarily include the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982, Part XI of the Convention and the Agreement on the Implementation of Part XI of 16 November 1994.
