Intelligent Control of Electrical Energy in a Public Lighting System by the Fuzzy Logic Method

Intelligent control of a public lighting network is the use of advanced technologies to remotely monitor and control the network’s luminaires. This enables effective energy management and enhanced lighting quality; intelligent control may include sensors for detecting light levels, movement, and weather conditions, as well as wireless communication systems for transmitting this data to a control center. In this chapter, we will focus on the fuzzy logic-based optimization of energy consumption in a smart public lighting network. In the first step, we will model the lighting network using Stateflow to examine the behavior of the system whose input is power and output is light intensity. Next, we will propose a fuzzy logic-based controller to optimize the electrical lighting network’s energy consumption; this controller’s input parameters will be traffic flow and weather conditions, and its output parameter will be electrical power. MATLAB/Simulink will be utilized to simulate the influence of the fuzzy controller on the light intensity.
