Wheelers Return to the Ojibwe

When Harriet feels ill, she returns to the Bad River, convinced that Lake Superior air heals her. She dies on one of these trips. Leonard, Jr. tries to stay at Bad River, but finds it too difficult. Then he moves near an Ojibwe Mission in Omena, Michigan, run by Reverend Dougherty, a friend of his father’s, but he and his wife find that challenging, too. So, Leonard joins the Eclipse Windmill Company. When he retires, at fifty-five, Leonard returns to the land he had purchased in Michigan, eventually opening a resort there called Sunset Lodge. At Leonard’s death, Charles Eugene realizes he can no longer stand the business life and takes over the resort. Both Leonard and C.E. see the Michigan land as a substitute for Odanah. When E.P. Wheeler accepts a call to serve as the pastor of the Ashland Congregational Church, he helps start the Northern Wisconsin Academy, which becomes Northland College. His mother declares the school the completion of their mission. E. P. leaves to make money in Lake Forest, Illinois, but returns to Bad River where he helps the Ojibwe fight the timber interests.
