Condylar Resection in Craniofacial Malformation Surgery

Some craniofacial malformations present with hemifacial asymmetries based on an overgrowth state of the maxillo-mandibular complex, the mandible, or the condyle. Condylar resection is one option as a single measure or combined with simultaneous orthognathic surgery of the maxilla or mandible. Condylar osteotomies enable to reduction of the vertical height of an affected overgrowth side and may also remove an active growth center. Condylar resections are an important part of the armamentarium of malformation surgery. The indication, diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical technique of condylar resection are demonstrated.
