PET-CT: A Tool for Etiological Diagnosis

Bone tracer scintigraphy often leads to a definite noninvasive diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis (CA), but biopsy confirmation is essential for a definite diagnosis of amyloid light-chain (AL) CA and may be required to make a definite diagnosis of amyloid transthyretin (ATTR) CA. New positron-emission tomography radiopharmaceuticals developed to track amyloid deposition in the brain in patients with Alzheimer’s disease are showing a good affinity for amyloid deposits in other organs, particularly in the heart, and represent a promising tool for the noninvasive diagnosis of AL-CA.
