Conclusions: Consolidated Research Findings and Recommendations
摘要
A perennial shortage of engineers and engineering skills in Sub-Saharan Africa has been attributed to ‘brain drain’ and the migration of skilled engineers to ‘greener pastures’ abroad. In addition, a mismatch of skills between those produced by universities and those required by industry has been attributed to inadequacies in training due to lack of experience and absence of high-level (PhD) training for engineering academics. Apart from advocating for enhancing the quality of engineering education and practice, this book focused on the development of a framework for doctoral training in engineering for industrialising countries, with Southern Africa as the case study, benchmarked on the success of doctoral training in the UK. This final chapter consolidates information gathered and used in the development of a suitable framework for Southern Africa. The chapter also provides recommendations to key stakeholders required to implement the concept of Doctoral Training Centres in their countries.
