This chapter is an introduction to the theory of hyperbolic structures in differential equations. The basic idea that is discussed might be called theManifoldinvariant|(Hyperbolictheory|( principle of hyperbolic linearization: If the system matrix of the linearized flow of a differential equation has no eigenvalue with zero real part, then the nonlinear flow behaves locally like the linear flow.
