Psychobiography is the study of the life and work of extraordinary individuals. As a part of psychological studies, psychobiographies have experienced an increase of interest in the past century. The study of extraordinary individuals and leaders has been described in the literature as an art and a science. It combines the exploration of an individual’s life, outstanding selected life events, careers, emotions, and thoughts, as well as the conduct of the individual’s life. Further, psychobiography has moved beyond WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic) contexts, has been researched in the context of culture, inter-culture, and cross-culture, and has become a well-known study approach in the context of leadership. The present entry describes what psychobiography is and how it connects to the study of leaders and extraordinary individuals in politics, the economy, and the humanities (social movements and activists).
