Calling or Living a Calling
摘要
Calling is a powerful concept for understanding purpose and identity in modern work. Originally rooted in religious traditions, calling now encompasses vocational psychology and organizational studies. Scholars differentiate between perceiving a calling, which refers to a sense of meaningful vocational direction, and living a calling, which involves actualizing that sense in one’s daily work. However, many face structural and psychological barriers that affect the realization of their calling. This entry examines key definitions, theoretical perspectives, and dynamics that support or hinder living a calling, including risks such as burnout, identity strain, exploitation, and other aspects of the darker side of calling. This entry also considers how leadership and organizational context impact the sustainability of one’s calling. While much research has relied on quantitative methods, new approaches reveal how callings evolve across life stages and contexts. Overall, these insights highlight calling as a complex, personal construct shaped by individuals, systems, and higher powers.
