Urban Agriculture: A New Dimension in Alternative Farming Systems for Achieving the Target of Food for All
摘要
With the increasing population and urbanization comes massive competition for food, resources, and space. Food security, which refers to the availability, access, and utilization of food for inhabitants, is a critical issue, especially in rapidly growing urban areas, where many people live in close proximity and often face challenges in accessing nutritious and affordable food. Urban agriculture plays a significant role in providing food security in urban areas in the face of enhanced demand for food and space. Urban agriculture can serve as a buffer by providing a local source of food that is less vulnerable to external shocks in times of crises, such as natural disasters or supply chain disruptions. While noticing these benefits of urban agriculture for food security, it is requisite to consider and address the potential challenges related to contaminated soil, limited space, water access, policies, and regulations in urban areas. Nonetheless, with proper planning, community involvement, and support from local governments, urban agriculture can significantly commit to enhanced food security in urban areas.
