Design of a Low-Cost Transtibial Prosthesis for Emergency Situations. The Case of the Doula Leprosarium Digital Fabrication Lab

Republic of Cameroon has a large number of amputation patients in need of an economical, functional and durable prosthetic leg. In addition, there is a shortage of health professionals in this area, which makes it difficult to care for these patients. Because of this, the development and implantation of prostheses should be performed by non-specialized personnel. On the other hand, digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 make it possible to quickly and easily customize medical devices. In particular, 3D scanning and additive manufacturing are two increasingly precise tools that are being used more and more in the healthcare sector. This paper proposes a model and method for designing and manufacturing lower limb prostheses by integrating a digital fabrication laboratory at the Douala leprosarium. This laboratory will be directed by Carmelite Missionaries Sisters. The model presented for this case study involves an improved approach to design and manufacture of customized transtibial prostheses by practitioners without medical or orthopedic experience in other disadvantaged areas.
