Microwave Disinfestations of Postharvest Agricultural Products

Control of insect pests is a crucial unit operation to save the quality of postharvest agricultural products. Thermal treatments are commonly used to reduce the post-harvest losses of agricultural products without any chemical residues. Among which, microwave (MW) technology has been regarded as a promising alternative to traditional heating methods for improving safety and quality of agricultural products due to its fast, volumetric, and deep penetration heating characteristics. This chapter provided comprehensive information about the most important advances on MW disinfestation of postharvest agricultural products and was divided into the following sections: the influential factors of MW disinfestation, MW disinfestation of different agricultural products, major advantages and disadvantages of MW disinfestation, and outlined the directions for the future research.
