Think Globally, Create Locally

This chapter examines the interplay of transformations and creativity. It describes a model of the creative process that begins with individuals and sometimes—but only sometimes—ends with far-reaching transformations that support the common good. The model draws on the theory of “personal creativity” and the cognitive transformations, intentions, and discretion that are a part of it. A recent extension of the model describes how creativity begins as something personal, but for any audience to grasp or use the outcome, they too must be creative. Various examples of personal transformations are reviewed in this chapter, as is previous work on problem finding and then benevolent and malevolent creativity. The key message of this chapter is that the transformations that influence society at large begin with personal creativity, so components of personal creativity must be appreciated and encouraged, in the classroom and throughout society.
