IGAD and Regional Conflicts

Starting from the 1960s, IGAD's member states have grappled with internal conflicts stemming from post-colonial state formation and societal structures. These divisions have given rise to both intra- and inter-state conflicts, ultimately leading to fragile states and a decline in social cohesion. This chapter provides an overview of regional conflicts in the Horn of Africa. The IGAD region has been historically affected by complex and interconnected conflicts. This chapter explores the dynamics and drivers of regional conflicts, including historical and contemporary factors, and political, social, and economic dimensions. It highlights the challenges faced by IGAD in addressing these conflicts and fostering lasting peace and stability in the region. The chapter explores the role of external actors in regional conflict and security. Understanding and effectively managing regional conflicts are crucial for IGAD's efforts in promoting sustainable peace and cooperation among member states.
