Since OpenAI released ChatGPT-3.5 in November 2022, ChatGPT has been widely explored for use in language education. Then, ChatGPT-4.0 was released in 2023, and GPT-4o was launched in 2024 by OpenAI. Sora, which can generate videos, was also announced in 2024. All these ChatGPT tools have significant potential in language education. This overview discusses the potential use of ChatGPT in foreign/second language teaching and learning. It provides recommendations for language teachers and learners to adopt and integrate ChatGPT into their language instructions and learning process, thereby augmenting the teaching effectiveness and learning experience.
