Virtual Reality–Assisted Language Learning (VRALL)
摘要
Virtual reality–assisted language learning (VRALL) refers to the use of high-immersion virtual reality (VR) to facilitate the learning and practice of languages. When engaging in VR, language learners can take advantage of its multiple affordances, including immersion, sense of presence, embodiment, authenticity, contextualization, agency, and safe space. VR enables language learners to immerse themselves in multimodal, authentic, and culturally rich scenarios, engaging in self-directed activities or interacting with other language learners, native speakers, or artificial intelligence (AI)–assisted conversational partners. Three central goals underpin this encyclopaedia entry. First, it provides an overview of VR with its definitions and classification. Second, it highlights the potential of VR for language learning and practice, offering examples of activities maximizing VR potential. Third, it summarizes key insights on VRALL and provides future directions. This entry intends to be of immediate relevance for computer-assisted language learning (CALL) scholars, language teachers, and VR technology enthusiasts, as well as for curriculum and VR application developers.
