Data-driven learning (DDL) has significantly advanced since its early focus on academic writing, exemplified by Tim Johns’s Kibbitzers. In recent years, a considerable proportion of DDL research has addressed specific aspects of language for academic purposes. A number of corpora aiming to represent academic language use in different contexts and levels have been compiled and used in DDL over the years. This entry discusses the key research areas where DDL has been successfully used in language for academic purposes to demonstrate effective academic writing and speaking and to address specific academic needs. The most widely studied areas include disciplinary variation, rhetorical functions, lexicogrammatical patterns, error correction and compiling personal corpora. Areas that have received little attention so far include spoken academic language and computer-mediated academic discourse. These areas are showcased in this entry with example studies and corpus resources designed for academic purposes.
