Augmented reality (AR) is an immersive technology that combines digital and real-world content by superimposing digital information in the form of text, images, videos, or three-dimensional (3D) models onto depictions of real-life scenes. Users can experience low-immersion AR (LiAR) using handheld devices (e.g. a smartphone, a tablet) or high-immersion AR (HiAR) using head-mounted displays (e.g. smart glasses). This entry provides definitions and classifications of AR, offers examples of applications within the context of augmented reality–assisted language learning (ARALL), and reviews the existing literature on ARALL. Directions for future research are recommended.

摘要
