Virtual Reality Assisted Language Learning
摘要
The present manuscript aims at defining virtual reality assisted language learning as well as the merits that virtual reality tools bring to second/foreign language education. Virtual reality assisted language learning can be defined as acquiring a second/foreign language in an immersive computerized environment, which replicates real-world situations, allowing students to experience, interact, and engage with concepts in a simulated three-dimensional world. Virtual reality engenders in students a high sense of presence and immersion, affording them the opportunity to learn language in a virtually real world. Virtual reality assisted language learning is of particular relevance to foreign language students who are not situated in the target language context and predominantly learn language in the classroom under the tutelage of language instructors. Applied to language education, virtual reality tools can enhance students’ motivation, autonomy, and confidence, diminish their anxiety, actively involve them in the learning process, allow them to assume responsibility for their own learning, and immerse them in the target language.
