Virtual exchange (VE) engages groups of learners from different cultural backgrounds in sustained online collaborative learning and interaction as part of their study programmes and under the guidance of teachers or trained facilitators. Its integration in teacher education has emerged as a transformative approach in recent years, enriching the pedagogical landscape for teachers and student teachers in the context of foreign language education. This entry explores the latest applications of VE within Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), where it has played a pivotal role and focuses on how this practice is reshaping the preparation and professional development of language teachers worldwide. Through a comprehensive review of research studies, this entry highlights the various benefits of VE for teacher education. The experiential learning opportunities that VE facilitates have been found to enhance teachers’ intercultural and linguistic competences, digital literacy, and pedagogical knowledge. Additionally, VE initiatives support the development of critical digital pedagogical skills and the establishment of international learning networks, allowing pre-service and in-service teachers to share their knowledge, gain confidence and feel part of a community. The entry concludes with an overview of the new directions that VE is taking within teacher education, such as blended intensive programmes or the use of virtual reality, which also contribute to the cultivation of a more interconnected and multicultural learning community of teachers. However, it is argued that improvements at institutional and policy levels need to be made if VE is to be upscaled, formally integrated into teacher education and generate teachers’ professional development.
