Global language endangerment is a growing concern, and many of the world’s smaller languages are threatened. Economic inequalities, societal pressures and linguistic ideologies have worked to decrease speakers and interrupt intergenerational transmission. CALL offers many potential advantages to the effort to stabilize endangered languages, such as distance video communication that can connect widely dispersed speaking communities, or opportunities for storage, curation and retrieval of documentation for language teaching and learning. However, if it is not implemented with care and sensitivity, CALL can do more harm than good. Small language communities often have very limited capacity and budgets. If time and money is invested in CALL solutions and there are resultant problems, it can cause severe delays or dead ends to reaching goals when time is of the essence. In worst-case scenarios, data sovereignty may be violated, and communities may lose control of how their language is stored, distributed or displayed to the outside world. Linguists and CALL practitioners need to be aware of the unique needs and contexts when collaborating with endangered languages communities.
