Task-based assessment in language learning evaluates language skills through real-life tasks, focusing on practical language use to achieve non-linguistic outcomes. Unlike traditional exercises centred on discrete language elements, it involves activities which require meaningful language application. Computer-assisted task-based assessment extends this by incorporating digital tools, thus necessitating adaptation to digital environments. This entry discusses examples of such assessment including multimedia tools, such as videos and audio recordings, which are often used to simulate real-life situations; text-based communication platforms, like emails, blogs, and instant messaging apps; chatroom discussions for collaborative problem-solving; and voice and video conferencing tools, which allow for a seamless blend of learning and assessment activities.
