This entry describes the value of developing the ability for teachers and students to understand, read and write code. It argues that it is important for everyone to know something about coding in a world that is dominated by digital technologies and where many jobs require people to be able to code at various levels. It describes the role that coding has played in the field of computer-assisted language learning (CALL), e.g. developing software and editing or producing web pages, as well as the changing nature of attitudes to coding in education. Further, it traces some of the history of language teachers learning to be coders and shows how the emphasis appears to be shifting back to learners beginning to code as a part of their regular schooling and how language work can come out of this. It briefly considers the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and the increasing need to understand how best to interrogate large language models (LLMs), making the related skill of AI literacy indispensable for teachers and learners. Finally, it suggests that while teachers may do less traditional coding, they still need coding literacy to adapt, integrate and evaluate digital tools in language teaching.
