Extended reality (XR) is an umbrella term for immersive technologies that blur the line between reality and virtuality. XR can create a dynamic, interactive, and authentic learning environment that allows language learners to engage in life-like scenarios and practice using language in context-rich settings that enhance their comprehension and retention. These unique characteristics have resulted in XR being used in language learning for more than 2 decades, and the existing literature mostly describes it as having positive effects on language learning. However, the use of XR in language learning also poses some challenges that are of concern to both educators and researchers. Therefore, this entry explored both the potential and possible challenges of utilizing XR in language education, with the aim of paving the way for further research and the wider adoption of immersive technologies in language education.
