Gamification, incorporating game elements, improves learners’ engagement and motivation in the process of language acquisition. This entry explores the integration of gamification strategies, particularly online quizzes, in language learning and assessment in higher education. It also discusses the efficacy of game-based elements such as points, badges, leaderboards, and awards in promoting dynamic and engaging educational settings. Underpinned by self-determination theory and flow theory, gamified approaches such as online quizzes provide immediate feedback, acknowledge achievements, and balance challenges with skill. Despite difficulties like over-reliance on extrinsic rewards and inclusivity concerns, gamification can transform language learning, promoting enhanced engagement and improved learning outcomes through strategic implementation and alignment with educational objectives.
