This entry discusses the use of data-driven learning (DDL) for teaching pragmatics in second or foreign language instruction. Pragmatics covers a range of language use including speech acts, conversational openings and closings, terms of address, direct and indirect meaning, conversational implicature and all manner of language production and comprehension that deals with speakers, listeners and their relationships. The entry first defines pragmatics and DDL and then discusses the common underpinnings of L2 pragmatics instruction and DDL. Next it explains the procedures involved in carrying out corpus searches, recognizing the lexical focus inherent in their design, and it describes the structure and presentation of the resulting output. It then reviews the studies of instructed L2 pragmatics and DDL that have been carried out and concludes by investigating advantages of DDL for instructed L2 pragmatics and the challenges that may be encountered when implementing DDL for L2 pragmatics instruction.
