In recent years, digital games have increasingly been investigated in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) research. Of the game types currently under investigation, digital simulation games have attracted significant interest from researchers. This entry will focus on this phenomenon. The discussion will first focus on defining the nature of this genre of digital game, and identifying distinguishing features. The hypothesized advantages of utilizing this type of game in language learning will be discussed from the perspective of contemporary SLA research. The discussion will then report noteworthy findings from the research base. Finally, areas of potential for future research will be identified.

摘要

In recent years, digital games have increasingly been investigated in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) research. Of the game types currently under investigation, digital simulation games have attracted significant interest from researchers. This entry will focus on this phenomenon. The discussion will first focus on defining the nature of this genre of digital game, and identifying distinguishing features. The hypothesized advantages of utilizing this type of game in language learning will be discussed from the perspective of contemporary SLA research. The discussion will then report noteworthy findings from the research base. Finally, areas of potential for future research will be identified.
