Digital games have been recognised as tools that provide space and opportunities to develop digital literacies. Within digital literacies, gaming literacies are also acknowledged as key elements in understanding second and foreign language (L2) teaching and learning. L2 learners’ gaming experience and game knowledge in their first or native language (L1) and L2 can lead to successful gameplay and involvement in gaming-associated communities and L2 discourses, aiding the development of L2 literacies and communication skills. Additionally, gaming in an L2 may require that L2 learners need a different set of literacies from their L1 to better understand in-game texts and play successfully in L2. Thus, L2 gaming literacies involve a complex variety of literacy skills and types of literacies. Understanding these gaming literacies requires connecting formal, in-class learning and informal, outside-of-class learning to guide L2 pedagogical decisions.
