摘要
Digital games have become an important part of young learners’ lives, and thus, game-mediated practices have gained popularity over the decades, with particular attention from the field of computer-assisted language learning. This chapter aims to provide a brief overview of how digital games have been utilized and integrated into second and foreign language (L2) learning and teaching with a focus on young learners (i.e. learners who are prior to their tertiary or university-level education). This chapter first provides definitions of several key ingredients to understanding game-mediated practices in the context of L2 learning and teaching. By drawing on several seminal empirical studies, the chapter next highlights the intersection between content-language integrated learning, game-mediated practices, and task-based learning. Then, the chapter situates games as multimodal texts and discusses the learning potentials of games as multimodal literacy practices. Lastly, suggestions for future research and pedagogical implications are provided.
