Laser and Light-Based Treatments
摘要
Chronic ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure from sunlight results in photoaging of the skin. Damage from UV exposure results in lines and wrinkles (rhytids), coarse texture, pigmentation changes, and thinning of the epidermis and dermis. Additional manifestations of chronic sun exposure include telangiectasias, actinic keratosis, and malignancies of the skin. Photoaging is accelerated with long and frequent periods of time in direct sunlight or in areas where UV rays from the sun can be reflected onto the skin such as by sand, snow, or bodies of water. Patients visit aesthetic offices and report they do not “lay” in the sun, yet their skin shows clear evidence of sun exposure and skin changes. An important educational opportunity exists, and practitioners should take the time to teach patients about sun safety and the ramifications of unintentional or intentional chronic sun exposure. Sunscreen, physical block (clothing), and shade decrease skin exposure to harmful radiation. Prevention of sun damage is the most efficient way to maintain youthful and healthy skin. However, laser and light-based treatments are able to provide rejuvenation and visible improvement to photoaged skin.
