A Story of Waste Colonialism: An Italian-Tunisian Case

The Collective of Experts of Réseau Tunisie Verte, based in Tunisia, was mobilized to strongly denounce the illegal import of mixed waste from Italy and is indignant at the lack of application of international laws on the transport of waste by Italy to Tunisia. It is well known from all parties that ratified international conventions in relation with the protection of environment and health of human and their right to live in a healthy environment. Taking into account the chaotic management of waste in the Mediterranean region and facing this new ecological crime, it is time to review the process of the control of transboundary movement and restriction to stop illegal waste movement. The developing countries aren’t dumping countries for developed ones; they are already facing national management of their proper waste. It is not a matter to sweep in front of its door but to resolve the problem nationally, regionally, and internationally.
