摘要

Smart farming, driven by the rapid adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and data-intensive applications, is poised to revolutionize the agricultural industry. Edge computing, a decentralized computing paradigm, plays a pivotal role in enabling real-time data processing and decision-making at the agricultural field’s edge. This paper explores the multifaceted role of edge computing in smart farming, showcasing its ability to enhance efficiency, reduce latency, optimize resource management, and bolster sustainability. From on-field sensor data analysis to precision agriculture and autonomous machinery, edge computing transforms agriculture into a data-driven, agile, and sustainable sector, addressing the challenges of feeding a growing global population. The modern agricultural landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, where precision and data-driven decision-making have become paramount. Smart farming integrates technologies like IoT sensors, drones, and autonomous machinery to collect a vast amount of data, from soil conditions to crop health. Edge computing emerges as the linchpin of this transformation, as it enables data processing and analysis to occur at or near the data source, eliminating the need to send all data to centralized cloud servers. In this paper, we delve into the multifaceted role of edge computing in smart farming, highlighting its significance across various dimensions of agricultural operations.
