Biological Effects of Euterpe oleracea Extract (Açaí)
摘要
The açaí palm (Euterpe oleracea Mart., Arecaceae) is cultivated in central and tropical South America. The extract deriving from Açai is considered as a functional food and, due to its numerous properties, defined as one of the superfruits. In particular, Açai fruit extracts may exert both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects to prevent risk factors for several disturbances or pathologies, i.e., hypertension, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), diabetes, dyslipidemia, and diseases related to different organs such as the kidney and lung. The nutritional profile of Açai is unique in terms of macronutrient composition and displays high quantity of antioxidants, fibers, vitamins, minerals, and polyphenol metabolites including anthocyanins and pro-anthocyanidins, in addition to other flavonoids. The beneficial properties of Açaí in the field of disease prevention significantly depend on several phenolic compounds contained in different part of this plant, such as fruit, leaf, seeds, pulp, and peel. Based on the biological properties of Açai, deriving from its major components, the present chapter has been conceived to report about its potential benefits on human health with specific regard to some chronic diseases.
