Introduction and Context

The introductory chapter sets the research agenda and lays out the institutional context within which the research takes place. More specifically, it starts by unfolding the research question and the reasons behind the choice of the subject and the theoretical framework(s) to be studied, it explains the research design and the sources, and it presents the structure of the book. Additionally, it portrays the institutional framework of the international organizations examined in this book, i.e., the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the European Union (EU), and the relations emerging between and among them. Moreover, it introduces the significance of examining their relation through the lens of the climate efforts put forward in all three of them.
