Anticipatory Systems

An anticipatory system is a natural system that contains an internal predicative model of itself and its environment, which allows it to change state at an instant in accordance with the model’s predictions pertaining to a later instant. Anticipatory systems are a subclass of complex systems since they must contain impredicative causal loops.
