Nature of Psychological Memory: An Involuted Model of Virtual Storage

It is customary in cognitive science to describe memory as being a virtual memory without elaborating its features. Primarily, this ascription arises from our inability to locate psychological memory in any particular location, either in a particular region of the brain or in a particular neuronal network. The problem with this ascription of virtual existence to psychological memory is that in spite of its virtuality, these memories are detailed. It seems that the psychological memory resides in some dimensions which are inaccessible otherwise. In the accompanying chapters, a higher dimensional topological model of cognition was described. In this chapter, we will extend that model to formally represent the psychological memory. This model not only explains why the psychological memory appears virtual to us, but it also explains why its recall is susceptible to distortions due to the involvement of our limbic system.
