Multi-level Governance and the Reconfiguration of Political Space: Theoretical Considerations from a Multinational Perspective

The literature pertaining to multi-level governance has increased exponentially over the last two decades and a half. This is due in good part to the development of the European Union as a new form of federal governance as well as to the desire by central state actors to gain more and more power. Although dismissing it altogether might be counter-productive, it must be kept at bay that the multi-level governance approach contributes to blurring the division of powers between the central state and member states within a federation.
