India which has 17% of the world’s population, 4% of the world’s water resources and 2.6% of the land area (MoWR, National Water Policy, Ministry of Water Resources, India, 2012) is projected to face an extraordinary strain on its fresh water resources. Though long-term climate averages show that India receives 1160 mm of average annual rainfall.
