An Overview of Machine Learning Applications in Disaster Waste Management

This study provides an overview of the problem of natural disaster waste (NDW) and their management (NDWM), some of the most disastrous events in the twenty-first century, their causes, natural disasters vis-à-vis waste generated by these different types of events, and some pre- and post- disaster steps to handle those waste materials keeping view the sustainability issue. The study also investigated how and at what steps AI/M can expedite the processes of managing NDW. Using Web of Science (WoS) database for 1999–2023, this study also performed scientometric analysis with 700 English language documents including research articles (review articles), book chapters, and proceeding papers. The scientometric analysis indicates that the application of AI/ML is new in the field and is emerging to be an important niche.
