Strain and Stress

Continuing the previous chapter’s exploration of the kinematics of large deformations, the present one introduces recent and new results that were obtained at the turn of the twenty-first century. These results are required to build the thermodynamic framework of the next Chap. 4 . The left Hencky strain, introduced in Sect. 3.1, and the new concept of thermal strain, introduced in Sect. 3.7, are certainly the two cornerstones of this new framework.
