The Potential Use of Animals for the Production of Veterinary Products

Livestock production is an economically important and growing sector. The growth and health of livestock around the world are affected by diverse infectious microorganisms. For cost-effective production, the key problem is the load of contagious diseases that livestock sustain. veterinary products are imperative tools in the control and prevention of animal diseases, tools that include veterinary drugs, vaccines, medicines such as antimicrobial agents, and diagnostic tools. Veterinary products are crucial to meeting the challenges of providing food because drugs improve feed efficiency, the rate of weight gain, and prevent and treat diseases in food-producing animals via the administration of drugs that inhibit infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized antibiotics as essential for cattle, pigs, and poultry, as growth promoters. This chapter highlights the potential use of animals for the production of veterinary products. The development of veterinary products uses pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic modeling as a scientific tool to select appropriate dosage regimes for clinical analysis. In animals, the usage of veterinary drugs is expected to produce drug deposits in animal-derivative products, which could threaten the health of humans and other organisms. Veterinary medicine could continue to improve yields from food animals by better supporting producer’s demands.
