An Urban Biomimetic Design Approach to Reduce Energy by Achieving Sustainable Development Pillars Through Modular Buildings: A Suspended, Interlocked Complex Case Study

In recent years, following global events, economic and political changes, and health and environmental crises, which led to scarcity of some building materials, and lack of manpower, governments began looking for quick alternatives, environmentally, healthy, industrial solutions, and economical for urban communities. In this study, the urban design porosity approach of suspended diversified interlocked modular precast unit complexes was used as an attempt to apply three pillars of sustainable development: environmental, social, and economic. The research’s main goal is to improve urban efficiency by achieving the three pillars of sustainable development using interlocking suspended modular building units by using tech-structurally mimicry of plants in nature and its natural urban benefit from the transformation and spontaneous natural change of sunrays, porosity, and shadows of the suspended urban mass. This leads, without human intervention, to natural motors that move air, shade, and shadow due to the difference in atmospheric pressure, and this leads to an energy-efficient, healthy urban community life full of diversity and the natural circulation that leads to space sterilization for individuals in the population mass. The study followed a qualitative and quantitative mixed method. Driven by preliminary, operational cost analysis, and pressure and CFD simulations using the Design builder tool and Andrew Marsh web application for shadow mask simulation. The research concluded that the structural approach that mimics technologically simulated nature proves increasing the efficiency of environmental and health residential complexes and it also showed a decrease in the initial and operational cost of the complex. And it facilitates the convergence of social relations and expands public urban spaces. And that facilitates applying the three pillars of sustainable development.
