Design of 1 × 4 Microstrip Patch MIMO Antenna for 5G Applications

This paper presents a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna array for applications in 5G wireless communications. The arrangement of multiple microstrip radiators is configured in E-plane while the low mutual coupling can be obtained by the use of shorted quarter-wavelength stubs. The gap between each antenna element is 0.032λ, with λ being the free-space wavelength at the center operating frequency. The proposed decoupling structure can be used to decouple multi-port MIMO arrays. An investigation has been conducted on a 1 × 4 array prototype to validate if the proposed decoupling configuration works. Simulation results prove that the MIMO antenna exhibits favorable performance at 4.8 GHz, offering a reflection coefficient of below −10 dB and a good isolation exceeding 20 dB. Additionally, it brings reasonable radiation patterns and a broadside gain of around 4.6 dBi.
