Using Information Technology to Identify Fruit Flies in Agriculture

Early detection of pests and diseases is one of the important requirements in farming of Agriculture. Detecting directly by human eyes the occurrence of pests when cropping takes a lot of effort and time; especially on the fields that are wide and far away from residence. In this paper, we propose a model to automatically monitor and warn about the occurrence of the common fruit fly Bactrocera Dorsalis Hendel (BDH) in Vietnam. The program image processing of computer based on the physical features of the BDH fruit fly will filter out the images that are sent from the camera in the field to conclude whether or not BDH is present. This model helps for the farmers to recognize fruit flies early and reduce much effort compared to direct observation with the eyes. The Experiments carried out on the many photographs that are taken at lychee orchards and apple orchards gave good results. This shows that our model can be applied in practice as a powerful tool for automatic and remote monitoring of fruit fields.
