摘要

Genome editing has many potential uses in forestry because it makes it possible to change the genes that control tree growth, the type of biomass they make, how they respond to stress, and how resistant they are to diseases. By employing tools such as CRISPR-Cas9, TALENs, and ZFNs, targeted changes to genomes can enhance desired traits and improve performance. Genome editing holds great potential for addressing challenges in forestry compared to traditional breeding methods. By manipulating genes related to lignin biosynthesis, researchers have successfully reduced lignin content in poplar trees, improving the efficiency of fiber pulping. Additionally, genome editing has been employed to enhance cellulose production in poplar, leading to increased biomass productivity. Moreover, genome-editing techniques have been used to manipulate flowering control in poplar, enabling the development of sterile varieties that prevent the spread of genetically modified traits to non-target populations. By targeting and modifying key genes involved in plant–pathogen interactions, researchers have achieved improved resistance against diseases such as leaf rust in poplar trees. Disease-resistant crop varieties not only increase productivity but also contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and reduce the reliance on pesticides. While genome editing offers numerous benefits, it is essential to consider the associated risks and ensure responsible and ethical use of this technology. Potential risks include unintended off-target effects, potential ecological impacts, and the spread of modified genes. Therefore, comprehensive risk assessments and public engagement are crucial for the responsible and beneficial application of genome editing in forestry. In conclusion, genome editing in agriculture presents tremendous opportunities for the development of high-yielding, tailored, and climate-resilient crop varieties. It enables precise modifications of genes involved in various traits, including growth characteristics, biomass modifications, stress tolerance, and disease resistance.
