This lab activity aims to evaluate the soil structureStructure and consistence of a soil sample. Soil structureStructure refers to the way soil particles clump together into larger units, which plays a crucial role in water absorption and aeration. Meanwhile, consistence describes the ease with which a lump of soil can be crushed by the fingers and relates to soil resistance against erosion and rootability. The procedure involves digging a hole at least 30 cm (1 ft) deep and examining the soil aggregates at different depths to evaluate the soil structureStructure and moist soil’s consistence. Interpretation of the results shows that healthy soils have a granular structureStructure, allowing water and air to move with ease, while compacted soils have a platy or massive structureStructure, hindering water and air movement and root growth. Adding organic matter, lime, compost, biosolids, and manure can improve soil aggregation or structureStructure, which ultimately increases soil productivity. The consistence of a soil sample is affected by texture, humus content, and density and is often high in density or clay content for soils with the greatest consistence.
