Is Your Urban Soil Safe? Evaluating Contamination Risks and Mitigation Options

This lab focuses on the assessment of soil contamination in urban areas and the potential risks associated with gardening, farming, and working in such environments. Urban soils often contain contaminants from various sources, including industrial discharges, leaded paint, and fossil fuel combustion. The presence of heavy metals and other chemicals in the soil can pose health risks, making soil testing essential for ensuring the safety of food produced in urban gardens. Portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) analyzers are introduced as fast and reliable instruments for measuring trace metals in soil samples. The lab includes two exercises: one using a simple soil lead kit to test for hazardous lead levels and the other utilizing the PXRF analyzer to evaluate metal concentrations in soil samples. Learners are guided to interpret their results, compare them with residential area restrictions, and explore suitable plant options and potential sources of contamination. Additionally, recommendations for remediation practices, such as compost application and raised bed gardening, are provided to mitigate the risks associated with contaminated soil.
